Workshop engineer
Location: Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire Job type: Permanent, full time Salary: £36,000 per annum
The role
We are recruiting a Workshop Engineer on behalf of a well-established and globally respected business based in Huntingdon. This is a key role within a busy workshop and manufacturing team, responsible for producing precision components and finished items to customer specifications using conventional machine shop equipment.
You will play a central part in ensuring customers receive the correct product, to the correct specification, at the right time. Working as part of a close-knit team, you will bring machine shop experience and engineering knowledge to manufacture items that meet exacting customer requirements, whilst also supporting continuous improvement and the development of processes across the department. A willingness to learn new skills and a flexible, positive approach are essential.
Main responsibilities
- Set up and operate workshop equipment including bandsaw, lathe, vertical mill, and guillotines to produce items to production sheet specifications
- Select correct materials from stock and produce finished items with minimal wastage
- Inspect finished items and test parts against requirements
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, sketches, and patterns for cutting and fabricating
- Accurately complete documentation and stock management systems for each completed job
- Document processes and procedures for new or revised product designs
- Identify and communicate opportunities to improve processes, reduce costs, and improve safety
- Maintain stock to a safe and accurate standard
- Provide training to new and existing staff as required
- Keep the work environment safe, tidy, and compliant with safety procedures at all times
Skills/experience
- Experience using general workshop equipment such as bandsaws, lathes, vertical mills, and guillotines
- Engineering or machine shop experience or equivalent qualification
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, sketches, and technical instructions
- Strong attention to detail and a methodical, quality-focused approach
- Care and patience when handling fragile or delicate materials
- Comfortable using computer systems for stock management and documentation
- Proactive, flexible, and willing to learn new skills across the production environment
- Strong communication and teamworking skills
Salary & working hours
- Salary: £36,000 per annum
- Hours: Full time, Monday to Friday
