Project engineer
Location: Outskirts of St Neots Job type: Permanent, full time Salary: £55,000 Hours: Monday to Thursday 08:30 - 17:00, Friday 08:30 - 16:00
The role
We are recruiting a Project Engineer on behalf of a market-leading engineering and manufacturing business. This is an office-based role with regular customer site visits, and will suit an experienced project engineer with a proven track record of successful project delivery within a process engineering or manufacturing environment.
You will take full ownership of contracts from receipt of order through to successful installation and handover, acting as the primary point of contact for the customer throughout the life of the project. The role involves close collaboration with all internal departments as well as external clients, subcontractors, and suppliers. Overnight UK travel and occasional overseas trips may be required, and in some cases you will be required to oversee installations and manage subcontractors on site.
Main responsibilities
- Develop and agree project scope with the customer and sales team
- Own and maintain the project schedule including Gantt chart
- Produce all project documentation including project numbers, scope of supply, timing plans, P&IDs, BOMs, and provisional layout drawings
- Specify and source bought-out components and equipment
- Manage project change throughout the project lifecycle
- Organise delivery and installation of equipment, including customer acceptance testing (FAT/PDI), packing and shipping, installation planning, site acceptance testing, and training and documentation handover
- Book and manage installation resources and produce associated documentation including RAMs
- Remain commercially aware throughout, ensuring invoices are issued on time
- Oversee on-site installations and manage subcontractors in the UK and overseas when required
Skills/experience
- Proven experience in a Project Engineer or similar role within a process engineering environment
- Track record of successfully delivering engineering projects from order through to handover
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to interact across all levels internally and externally
- Proficient in Microsoft Office including Outlook, Excel, Word, and MS Project
- Proficient in AutoCAD LT
- Knowledge of steam systems, pneumatics, hydraulics, and pipework, with a basic understanding of electrical control systems (highly beneficial)
- Enthusiastic, proactive, and solutions-focused approach
- Full UK driving licence — essential
