Toolroom technician
Location: Peterborough, Cambridgeshire Job type: Permanent, full time Salary: Up to £36,500 per annum, dependent on experience
The role
We are recruiting a Toolroom Technician on behalf of a well-established precision manufacturing business based in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire. The toolroom team plays a key role in keeping production running efficiently and to the required quality standards, and this is an excellent opportunity to join a skilled, close-knit team in a stable and technically rewarding environment.
Reporting to the Toolroom Manager, you will be responsible for manufacturing, repairing, modifying, and maintaining jigs, fixtures, gauges, and associated production support tooling. You will work closely with toolmakers, setters, maintenance, quality, and production teams to ensure tooling solutions are fit for purpose and production runs smoothly.
Main responsibilities
- Manufacture, repair, maintain, and modify jigs, fixtures, assembly aids, checking fixtures, and production support tooling to required specifications
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, sketches, specifications, and sample components to produce accurate tooling solutions
- Operate standard toolroom equipment including milling machines, lathes, drills, grinders, saws, and hand tools safely and effectively
- Carry out fitting, assembly, adjustment, and bench work to ensure jigs and fixtures function correctly for production use
- Inspect completed work using appropriate measuring equipment including verniers, micrometers, and height gauges
- Respond promptly to fixture or tooling issues that may affect quality, efficiency, or machine uptime
- Assist with tool trials, fixture validation, and continuous improvement activities
- Maintain accurate records of fixture manufacture, modification, repair, and maintenance activity
- Follow all health and safety procedures, risk assessments, and safe systems of work at all times
Skills/experience
Essential:
- Previous experience working in a toolroom, engineering workshop, or similar hands-on technical role
- Good mechanical aptitude with the ability to understand how jigs, fixtures, and production tooling support manufacturing and inspection processes
- Competence in using manual machining equipment and hand-fitting techniques
- Ability to read and understand technical drawings, tolerances, and work instructions
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate, high-quality work
- Good problem-solving skills with a practical approach to resolving tooling issues
- Able to work independently and as part of a wider team
Desirable:
- Recognised apprenticeship, NVQ, City and Guilds, or equivalent engineering qualification
- Experience in precision engineering, toolmaking, or a similar manufacturing environment
- Basic computer literacy for recording maintenance and tooling information
Salary & working hours
- Salary: Up to £36,500 per annum, dependent on experience
- Hours: Daytime hours, Monday to Friday
