CNC machinist

The role
We are recruiting a CNC Machinist on behalf of a well-established precision manufacturing business based in Peterborough, Cambridgeshire. With a skilled toolroom team and a strong focus on quality, this is a technically engaging environment for an experienced machinist looking for a stable, long-term opportunity.
Reporting to the Toolroom Manager, you will be responsible for setting, operating, and maintaining CNC machinery to manufacture, modify, and repair precision components, tooling, jigs, and fixtures. You will work closely with toolmakers, production teams, and quality personnel to support machine uptime and ensure components are produced to the highest standards of accuracy and efficiency.
Main responsibilities
- Set, operate, and monitor CNC milling, turning, or machining centre equipment to produce precision components to engineering drawings and specifications
- Machine, modify, and repair tooling, inserts, electrodes, jigs, fixtures, and associated components
- Interpret technical drawings, CAD/CAM data, work instructions, and job cards to determine machining requirements
- Select and prepare appropriate cutting tools, fixtures, workholding methods, and machine settings for each job
- Carry out first-off, in-process, and final inspection checks using verniers, micrometers, gauges, and height gauges
- Make minor programme edits, offset adjustments, and tooling changes to maintain dimensional accuracy
- Support preventative maintenance by cleaning, checking, and caring for CNC machinery and associated equipment
- Contribute to continuous improvement activities aimed at reducing downtime, waste, scrap, and cycle times
- Follow all health, safety, environmental, and housekeeping procedures at all times
Skills/experience
Essential:
- Previous experience as a CNC Machinist, CNC Setter Operator, Toolmaker, or similar role within precision engineering or manufacturing
- Ability to read and understand engineering drawings, tolerances, and technical specifications
- Practical experience using CNC mills, lathes, machining centres, or spark erosion equipment
- Competence in using manual measuring equipment and carrying out quality checks
- Good mechanical aptitude, problem-solving ability, and attention to detail
- Able to work independently and as part of a team
Desirable:
- Experience working with precision tooling, mould tool repair, or a similar manufacturing environment
- Knowledge of CNC controls and programming
- Recognised engineering apprenticeship, machining qualification, or equivalent practical experience
- Experience with spark erosion equipment
Salary & working hours
- Salary: Up to £36,500 per annum, dependent on experience
- Hours: Daytime hours, Monday to Friday
