Metering Technician – 6 Month Contract


The Role:

We're recruiting a Metering Technician on behalf of one of the UK's leading water providers, covering the Hartlepool area. This is a six-month contract position working 37 hours per week, offering a fantastic opportunity for someone who enjoys working outdoors, managing their own workload and delivering great customer service every single day.

This is a field-based, autonomous role where you'll be out on the road, visiting customers, reading and exchanging meters, identifying potential issues and acting as the face of a large, well-respected organisation. You'll be provided with a uniform and a van, and you'll have the full backing of an experienced team behind you. Please note: applicants must be based within 30 minutes of Hartlepool and surrounding villages.


Main Responsibilities:

  • Carrying out customer-driven meter reading queries, planned meter readings and boundary box meter exchanges within agreed service levels
  • Completing meter exchange operations efficiently and cost-effectively, ensuring all work meets relevant regulations
  • Conducting flow tests, void inspections and confirming correct supply connections and postal address plots
  • Identifying and reporting maintenance jobs, potential leaks and reactive work requirements
  • Ensuring accurate meter reads, maintaining up-to-date records and tracking new and old meters
  • Reporting billing information amendments to improve customer service
  • Replacing lids and completing non-routine reading and income-related operations as required
  • Complying with all health and safety regulations to protect yourself and members of the public
  • Delivering excellent customer service to both internal and external customers at all times
  • Contributing positively to team working and identifying opportunities for self-development

Skills/Experience:

  • Customer-focused with a professional manner and positive attitude
  • Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions — rain or shine
  • Able to manage your own workload and work autonomously day to day
  • Physically fit — the role involves walking approximately 3 to 8 miles per day
  • Confident using handheld computer devices
  • Reliable, punctual and able to work flexibly across the working window, including early starts and late evenings
  • Must live within 30 minutes of Hartlepool — essential
  • Full UK driving licence — essential

Hourly Rate & Working Hours:

Competitive rate of pay. 6-month temporary contract, 37 hours per week. Flexible working hours within the window of 6:30am–8:00pm Monday to Friday and 8:00am–2:00pm on Saturdays.
