The role
We are recruiting a Mechanical Fitter on behalf of a well-established engineering and manufacturing business based in Biggleswade, Bedfordshire. This is a hands-on, shop floor based role working within a skilled mechanical fitting team, responsible for the mechanical assembly and detailed fitting of complex bespoke machinery to exacting quality and ISO standards.
You will build machines and sub-assemblies from start to finish, demonstrating strong mechanical engineering skills to problem solve, rectify errors, and work closely with the design team on engineering changes. This role demands someone who genuinely makes components fit — not just assembles — and who takes pride in championing a build through from initial stages to final despatch. A team-focused, methodical approach and strong bench craft skills are essential.
Main responsibilities
- Assemble and fit the mechanical elements of special purpose machines and sub-assemblies to structured build levels
- Build and fit tolerance connecting bearings, jacking and pneumatic systems, chain and belt drives, and conveyor systems with interfacing instruments
- Complete basic machining and fabrication of parts as required
- Document component changes and non-conforming parts identified during the build
- Lead machine build orders, communicating progress and issues to the supervisor or manager
- Liaise with internal teams to resolve build and design issues
- Assist the software and controls engineer with machine commissioning and support the test engineer with FATs
- Support the breakdown and packing of machine builds for despatch
- Maintain accurate production build documentation and complete timesheets daily
- Adhere to all health and safety policies, COSHH requirements, and ISO 9001 quality standards
Skills/experience
Essential:
- Apprenticeship trained or equivalent qualification such as City and Guilds, ONC, or NVQ Level 2
- Minimum five years of experience working professionally in a mechanical manufacturing environment
- Strong mechanical engineering skills in the building and fitting of component parts
- Ability to read and work from technical drawings and build instructions
- Competent in bench craft techniques including marking, drilling, cutting, threading, filing, and light forming
- Competent in the use of machine tools including pillar drills, grinders, presses, and basic turning
- Computer literate with competency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and ERP/MRP systems
Desirable:
- Machining experience including turning, milling, and general machine shop skills
- TIG welding experience, ideally with stainless steel
- Counterbalance forklift truck licence
- First Aid at Work certificate
- HNC, HND, or NVQ Level 3 and above
Salary & working hours
- Salary: £36,000 - £40,000 per annum
