Electrical design engineer
Location: St Neots, Cambridgeshire Job type: Permanent, full time Salary: Up to £55,000 per annum
The role
We are recruiting an Electrical Design Engineer on behalf of a well-established engineering and manufacturing business. This is a hands-on, office-based role working closely with mechanical design, project, and software teams to deliver control panel layouts, schematic drawings, component and cable specifications, and technical support to installation teams and clients. Occasional travel to client or supply chain sites may be required.
This is a broad and varied role with real scope for development, covering everything from generating electrical diagrams and specifying components through to supporting the spares and service department and advising on technical matters arising from sales enquiries. Main responsibilities
- Generate electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic diagrams using Eplan Pro Panel
- Specify and source components, consumables, and hardware in line with project cost targets
- Support PLC and HMI selection in conjunction with the software department
- Work to customer-provided specifications and appropriate legislation and standards including BS7671, IEC 60204, ISO 13849, UL508A, NFPA79, and AS3000
- Ensure product safety and compliance with relevant codes and standards
- Work alongside the mechanical design department to package control systems within machine envelopes
- Provide technical support and documentation for product quality, test, inspection, and application queries
- Support the spares and service department with parts sourcing and technical queries
- Research obsolete component replacements for existing machines in the field
- Work with low voltage single and three phase AC systems ranging from 110V to 600V, and extra low voltage DC systems at 24V
Skills/experience
Essential:
- Proven practical electrical wiring experience — mechanical experience would also be beneficial
- Experience reading and interpreting technical drawings and electrical system data
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Word and Excel
- HNC/HND or above in an electrical engineering related subject (or equivalent experience)
- Ability to manage a varied workload with a flexible, problem-solving approach
- Able to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
Desirable:
- Previous electrical CAD experience, specifically with Eplan Pro Panel
- Qualification to BS7671
- Knowledge of control panel design for international markets including the US and Australia
- Knowledge of PLC hardware and software such as Mitsubishi, Allen Bradley, and Siemens
- Knowledge of industrial networking systems including Ethernet/IP, Modbus TCP, RS485, and RS232
Salary & working hours
- Salary: Up to £55,000 per annum
- Hours: Daytime hours, Monday to Friday with an early finish on Fridays
- Office based with occasional travel to client or supply chain sites
