The Role: Design Engineer

An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced Design Engineer to join a well-established manufacturer known for delivering bespoke engineered equipment to a range of industrial sectors. This is a permanent, full-time position based near St Neots, Cambridgeshire, working within a collaborative design team that supports the full lifecycle of in-house manufactured machinery and systems.

In this hands-on role, you’ll work on a diverse range of mechanical design projects, producing accurate 3D models and detailed manufacturing drawings using Autodesk Inventor and AutoCAD. You’ll liaise directly with suppliers to source materials, components, and ensure timely delivery, contributing to the smooth flow of projects from concept through to production.


Main Responsibilities (Design Engineer):

  • Create and develop 3D models and detailed engineering drawings using Autodesk Inventor and AutoCAD.
  • Work on a variety of mechanical systems and equipment designs.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external suppliers to meet technical and delivery requirements.
  • Ensure all designs meet engineering standards, specifications, and safety guidelines.
  • Manage projects from concept through to completion, working to set deadlines.
  • Support manufacturing teams with technical input when required.

Skills & Experience (Design Engineer):

  • Proven experience using Autodesk Inventor and AutoCAD in an engineering design environment.
  • Strong mechanical engineering background — ideally qualified or time-served.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience liaising with suppliers for pricing and lead times.

Desirable but not essential:

  • Previous hands-on shop floor experience (machining, fabrication, welding).
  • Experience designing automated machinery is desirable.
  • Working knowledge of:
    • Steam and fluid systems
    • Pneumatics
    • Stress and tolerance calculations
    • Sheet metal development
    • Motor/gearbox sizing and power calculations

Salary & Working Hours (Design Engineer):

  • Hours: 8:30 am – 5:00 pm (Monday–Thursday), 8:30 am – 4:00 pm (Friday).
  • Overtime: Occasionally available.
  • Salary: Competitive and dependent on experience.
