Audio engineer
Location: Cambridge area Job type: Permanent, full time Salary: £40,000 - £75,000 per annum Hours: Five days per week, office based
The role
We are recruiting an Audio Engineer on behalf of a well-established and innovative technology business based in the Cambridge area. This is a high-impact role at the cutting edge of audio processing technology, responsible for leading the development of advanced audio solutions for next-generation mission-critical communication products.
The business is open to candidates at all levels of experience — from those earlier in their career through to seasoned senior engineers — provided you have a strong background in audio engineering and the core technical skills required. The role, responsibilities, and salary will be shaped around the right person.
You will serve as the technical authority for audio software within a collaborative engineering team, architecting and optimising real-time audio algorithms and DSP pipelines that directly influence the performance and reliability of products used in demanding, safety-critical environments. Working alongside embedded software, hardware, systems engineering, and acoustics specialists, you will drive innovation in noise reduction, echo cancellation, beamforming, and beyond. Please note that this role will require UK security clearance, which the business will support the successful candidate in obtaining.
Main responsibilities
- Architect, design, and implement real-time audio processing algorithms and DSP pipelines
- Develop technologies including noise reduction, acoustic echo cancellation (AEC), beamforming, voice activity detection, audio enhancement, and custom codecs
- Ensure software solutions meet stringent performance, latency, stability, and reliability requirements
- Serve as the technical authority for audio software, guiding design decisions and setting engineering standards
- Lead technical reviews, mentor junior engineers, and support cross-functional engineering teams
- Drive the architectural evolution of audio subsystems and long-term technology roadmaps
- Work closely with embedded software, hardware, systems, and acoustics teams to ensure seamless integration
- Support product development from concept through to delivery, including prototyping, testing, tuning, and verification
- Collaborate with product management to define requirements and translate them into robust technical solutions
- Conduct performance analysis, debugging, and optimisation of audio software across multiple platforms
- Develop automated test frameworks and audio validation tools where appropriate
- Stay informed of emerging audio technologies, DSP methods, and industry trends, contributing to patents and internal knowledge bases
Skills/experience
Essential:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Audio Engineering, DSP, or a related field
- Five or more years of professional experience developing real-time audio software, DSP algorithms, or embedded audio systems
- Deep knowledge of DSP algorithms including AEC, noise reduction, AGC, beamforming, VAD, and filtering
- Strong coding skills in C/C++ for real-time embedded systems
- Experience optimising for low-latency and resource-constrained platforms
- Familiarity with audio frameworks, DSP libraries, or fixed-point environments
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and debugging skills
- Ability to lead complex technical projects end to end
Desirable:
- Knowledge of TETRA, DMR, LTE/MCX, or similar communication standards
- Experience with MATLAB or Python for algorithm development and validation
- Understanding of beamforming, microphone arrays, or acoustic system behaviour
- Experience with ARM platforms, RTOS environments, or multi-core optimisation
- Exposure to machine learning-based audio processing techniques
Salary & working hours
- Salary: £40,000 - £75,000 per annum
